Rubi-Ka Grid Report Issue 23 - 11 November, 2004
Funcom announces new Game Director for Anarchy Online

Impressive looking graphics upgrade, new live content and much more

Hi, and welcome to another edition of the Anarchy Online newsletter. In this issue we have some truly exciting news about the future of AO, as well as a personal letter from Morten Byom, the new Game Director for Anarchy Online.

First off it’s appropriate to mention the fact that Marius Enge, the former Game Director for Anarchy Online, has decided to leave Funcom. He has accepted a position as Senior Designer for one of the premier upcoming MMO games. Funcom is sad to see Marius leave, but at the same time grateful for the outstanding work he has delivered through the seven years he worked on AO. Funcom wishes him the best of luck in his new endeavor.

We are sure we have found a fantastic replacement in Morten Byom, who has proven himself in Anarchy Online for years. You can see a personal letter from Morten about the future of AO, and a bit about himself, in this newsletter. At the same time Funcom is further staffing up the Anarchy team. One of the newly arrived is Enno Rehling, who was Lead Programmer on Notum Wars (Expansion pack of the year, CGW). An already multi-award winning staff mixed with additional quality newcomers in the weeks to come means that Funcom feel confident about a continued strong future for Anarchy Online.

Funcom is also very happy to announce a major graphics upgrade for Anarchy Online. Even though AO has constantly received great praise and awards for its graphics and art direction, we always seek to make something better. The first evidence of a vastly updated world will be experienced through all-new ground textures and more detailed characters. Moreover, the entire color scheme will be upgraded to make the planet more vibrant, colorful and lush. All of these changes will be implemented in the months to come, in addition to new playfields which will further escalate the intense and action-filled alien conflict. It’s indeed a good time to be an AO player!

Seeing the positive evolution of Anarchy Online over the past few years, Funcom once again emphasizes our commitment to keep on developing quality content for the ultimate sci-fi MMORPG. It’s Morten Byom who will spearhead that development together with Project Director Ole Schreiner, and we have great confidence in their ability to make AO even better. Without further ado we let Morten present himself:

Hello fellow Rubi-Kans!

With this letter I would like to introduce myself and give you a small insight about who I am and where I come from. I will also shed some light on my many plans for Anarchy Online in the years to come. The first thing I want to say is that I wish Marius the best of luck in his new career, and I hope that he will one day return.

I have worked on Anarchy Online for 5 years. I was initially hired as a World Designer, and have since held several roles on the team. My first task was designing and building the world of Rubi-Ka, before I became Lead World Designer for the Shadowlands expansion pack. There I created the playfields Nascense, Penumbra and Pandemonium, amongst other duties. During Alien Invasion I was responsible for adapting all the existing playfields to cater for the player-made cities, and I also created large parts of the ICC shuttleport. Additionally I served as Lead Graphics Artist overseeing the graphics production.

Besides being involved with the development I am an avid Anarchy Online player and can honestly say I am addicted to both the game and its surrounding community. Over the years I have played several characters above level 200 and well into the shadow levels and hope to one day soon reach 220. Experiencing the game from a player’s perspective has given me invaluable insight to the different aspects of the game, both its strengths and weaknesses, and this will hopefully improve my perspective when making decisions"?

When it comes to my main priorities for the coming period I promise I will go through all the current gameplay elements, and evaluate if any immediate changes need to be done. When I have concluded I will do my best to implement the necessary changes as fast as possible. There are already features and game elements that I would like to change, and I hope several of these adjustments are out before Christmas. I would like to mention that when we are dealing with a live product we must tread carefully to ensure that we do not break or unbalance the game. It is more important to us to get these improvements right, rather than to sacrifice quality to rush untested features into the game.

When it comes to long-term goals I would like to increase the amount of free content upgrades and I would also like to strengthen several aspects of the end-game. As you have read by now we have started the process of upgrading the graphics, and I am very positive to what this will bring in terms of world beauty. Additionally we are working towards creating new expansion packs, which will add new features and much more to the game.

I am aware that I am standing on the shoulders of giants when it comes to being a Game Director for AO. Still, as I have been an integral part of the team for years I feel confident I can carry on the torch to further illuminate AO. I truly look forward to take the creative lead, and will do my best in making the ultimate sci-fi MMORPG even better. This means that I, too, will keep focusing on the sci-fi aspects of AO, as well as building on strengths like fast-paced action, deep character advancement opportunities, intriguing gameplay-on-demand features, adding more landscapes to an already beautiful world and naturally expanding on the social opportunities.

Feedback from you has told us that besides improving our graphics, there seems to be a strong desire to see features such as shared banks for account holders, changes to SK and a wish to see our veteran players rewarded, among other things. We are already working on finding solutions for these needs. We are listening and will never lose sight of the fact that the world of Rubi-Ka is a partnership between us and the players. I therefore hope you will continue to give us constructive feedback through fansites and forums. This enables us to become even better at what we do.

To round off I would like to bring forth a few images from one of the upcoming Alien playfields. These areas can be found in the non-terra formed part of Rubi-Ka, and will contain some brand new experiences and challenges never before seen in Anarchy Online. This playfield will be out before Christmas!

See you on Rubi-Ka!

Sincerely,
Morten Byom

Exploits/Exploitable Bugs in Anarchy Online
[Source Genevra Di'Venague(Funcom)]

Our Exploit Team Lead goes through some of our guidelines for dealing with exploits/exploiters, and answers a few of the most common questions that arises in dealing with our enforcement of them.

Part I - general information
A lot has happened in Anarchy Online since I last wrote an article about exploits the 15th of December, 2001, so I figured it was time for an update about some changes which will hopefully clear up some of the questions you might have - In the second part of the article, I will use some of the questions I've received over the last year(s) in order to explain and illustrate.

Generally talking, we've been actively working to remove exploits and exploiters from the game in order to provide our customers with a more enjoyable, and fairer gaming environment.

What is an exploit anyhow?

No. 11 of our Rules of Conduct (RoC) states the following: "You will not exploit any bug in Anarchy Online and you will not communicate the existence of any such exploitable bug (the definition of bugs like this is: a bug that grants the user unnatural or unintended benefits in game), either directly or through public posting, to any other user of Anarchy Online. You will promptly report any such exploit via exploits@anarchy-online.com address and never use it again."

An exploit is a bug that grants a user an unnatural or an unintended benefit in the game for a character of their profession and level. Meaning, it's a bug or design error that makes it possible for characters to fight monsters, solve quests, earn money, get items, etc. that normally should be out of that character's reach or not possible in the first place. Basically, exploiting can be described as cheating.

If you're not sure if something is considered an exploit here's what we expect you to do, and what you shouldn't do:

Send an email to exploits@anarchy-online.com, or genevra@anarchy-online.com including a description of what you think might be an exploit - this is the correct channel to use in regards of exploits. Try to include as many details as possible such as character names involved, the level and faction (Omni-Tek, clan or neutral) of the characters involved, date/time when it happened, the playfield where it happened, etc. and possibly a step by step procedure. You'll receive a reply, sometimes with the request for more details or an in-game meeting if needed.

We expect you to inform us about exploits, not tell other players about your discovery (this includes in-game channels, message boards and other possible communications) and to not use the exploit after you've found it. It is very important not to spread information about exploits after they have been discovered, as the team needs time to solve the problem and to keep the amount of players that might use it as small as possible.

Also, remember that exploiting and/or sharing of exploit-information might lead to the suspension of your account, banning and/or deleting of characters/items/credits. Furthermore, we'll not put out any information about exploit fixes until they have been patched to the live dimensions; we do that in order to not spread exploit information ourselves.

Part II. Onto some of the questions I received over the last year(s)
"Will I get banned for reporting an exploit?"

If you follow the procedure mentioned above you do not have to worry about actions on your account for reporting an exploit you discovered, saw or heard about. No-one has ever been banned for reporting an exploit only.

"Did you really give player X item X for reporting an exploit?"

No, I never gave, nor will I give an item to any player as a reward - exception: chocolate cake when I'm in a good mood. But seriously, there are players who received for instance a first and last name change from me for being very good in reporting exploits, others received a height change (to one of the existing 3 sizes in AO), fatness change, some tokens or a face-change, etc. as a reward and acknowledgement for their help. I highly appreciate the help from players and this is one way to show my appreciation besides thanking them with words.

"How come the suspensions or the "punishments" in general vary for players?"

That's a good and valid question - let me try and tell you about what usually happens when we get a report about an exploit/exploiter.

First off, note that we have different levels of exploits according to their seriousness. The offences are dealt with keeping the severity in mind. As well, the account history also comes into effect - meaning, if the record's clear and the offence is a minor one the player might get away with a warning. Of course, it can also happen that a player with a clean record can be banned on the first offence (which is determined due to the seriousness of the offence again). Or vice versa, a player with a bad history on the account can be permanently banned for a minor offence if it seems the player won't ever stop doing what he/she did/does.

You can probably already see that it might not always be an easy call - therefore, the rather delicate cases are always discussed with the team, and decisions are made together.

Each report (be it from a player, from a GM/ARK or from our logs) is looked at as soon as possible, and every e-mail receives a reply. Usually, the report includes a player-name so the first thing we do is check the accused character - note: there is always an investigation before we take any actions against an account.

If we have proof that the character abused a bug the next step can be (according to the severity of the exploit) - an e-mail notification about what happened and the chance to comment on the accusation (minor exploits, account most likely not suspended), closing the account during the investigation (suspension, the account will probably be re-opened if we don't come across more offences on the account during the investigation), banning the account (severe exploits, exploiters that come back on another, either new, bought or transferred account, and weren't allowed to have a new account, etc.) If you receive such an e-mail, always only reply to the original e-mail that has been sent to you. Do not send in several, new e-mails regarding the same topic. Do not log in to a friend's account in order to petition your case. Do not ask friends to petition for you. Do not take it to the message boards as you risk your message board account being closed if you do this, etc.

Remember, there will always be an e-mail sent out to the e-mail address that is in the account information. If you didn't receive an e-mail it's most likely that you're using a new e-mail account and haven't updated the e-mail address in your account information. If that's the case you should update your account information with the new e-mail address and send in a request to re-send the original e-mail.

What separates us from most other MMORPGs is that we look at each case separately.

Now, naturally, it can happen that we make a mistake - in that case, if you feel you have been wrongly banned/suspended get back to us using only the original e-mail that has been sent to you, and discuss the case with us in a mature manner. If it turns out that we made a mistake, the account will be re-opened and the time the account was wrongly closed will be reimbursed in most cases.

This leads to another factor that affects the outcome of a case - players should remember that it is also against the rules to abuse Funcom staff and volunteers. Frankly, it's just unnecessary. Abusive, threatening, or insulting language toward ARKs, GMs, or any other person acting on behalf of Funcom at any point in the process will factor in to the final outcome. A simple explanation for your case is the best way to get your point across.

"Well, where's the proof that I did this and that? You can't prove it. Show me!"

As mentioned before, the cases where we close an account solely because of a suspicion are very, very rare (this could be a case where we know a player did something, but still need to figure out what exactly happened, and the consequences of leaving the account open are considered dangerous for the game-world), meaning there's always an investigation, respectively proof, before we close an account. The last thing we want to do is close a player's account for no reason so this is not something that we take lightly or do without solid proof. Throughout an investigation, raw data is pulled out of our logs and is read an analyzed by trained employees. By providing this level of detailed information to a player or to the general public, we would open ourselves up to showing others how exploits can be done. That is why we won't give out those details. It is important to remember that while we do so with caution, we have the express right to close any account, for any reason, to protect the integrity of the game.

"What happened to player X?"

Any request about information about another player's case/account, be it per e-mail, petition, IRC message, etc. will be answered in the same way: we cannot reveal any information about another player's account at all, there are no exceptions. Meaning, we won't tell you if a player has been banned/suspended by us, we won't tell you why the player has been banned/suspended, and we won't tell you any details either. This is simply because we consider this sensitive and personal information of the account owner, and should not be shared with anyone but the owner of the account.

Try to keep in mind that just because we don't comment on things doesn't automatically mean they're true. ;)

"I only exploited to make you aware of this. I'm tired of the exploit not getting fixed and this was the only way to get it done!"

One of the most common answers - especially amusing if the player never petitioned/sent an e-mail about the problem with any of his/her characters. Again, always make sure to use the correct (or one at all) Funcom channel to report exploits. Only then can we guarantee that they're looked at immediately, verified and fixed. Remember that complaining to other players (in game, IRC, ICQ or whatever) does not count as a report of the problem.

"Why are some exploits not fixed immediately/earlier?"

Respectfully, I have to say that sometimes a "fix" might look very easy/obvious for a player, but in fact is not. The problem with some exploit fixes is that the specific code/design change can affect other, sometimes major parts of the game-world - in those cases the fixes might take longer, as we need to test and implement them very carefully.

"I know my character is going to be deleted/my account will remain closed, but can I remove item such and such before you do so?"

No, unfortunately, this is not possible. Ever.

"My account has been banned x months ago, I really think you should open it again."

Once a decision has been made to close an account permanently, the decision won't be altered.

"I wasn't exploiting myself, my brother/friend/sister/etc. was on my account."

You are entirely liable for all activities conducted through your account, and the login and player names registered to your account. In addition, you're not supposed to share an account.

"My friend/brother/sister/etc. told me it isn't an exploit when I asked him/her/etc. How can I know??"

As mentioned above in part I. - if you're unsure about something being an exploit or not, rather contact me per e-mail than talking to another player about it. Clearly, if you contact another player regarding that, you already must be suspicious if what you're curious about is an exploit/bug or not.

"I was only exploiting on my other account, why did you suspend all my accounts?"

In some cases we close connected accounts. Again - it depends on the severity of the offence/exploit, the co-operation of the player during the investigation, etc. If a player had multiple offences on several accounts it can happen that we do not want this player in the game at all anymore. Meaning, all accounts (current and future ones) will be terminated.

We're very happy that so many players enjoy Anarchy Online and we do our best to ensure you all an enjoyable gaming environment by catching exploits and exploiters. We want you to have fun and I hope this article will be helpful in understanding some of the ways we make that happen.

Exploiters in the community?
Normal players never see strange things - they play and have fun. But there are others who try to exploite, bribe and don't hesitate to do bad things to get much money. Right now some law suits are on stack against various companies and groups of persons who have one thing in common: 'How far can you go to earn money in online-games?'

It all started with Anarchy Online (AO) and Dark Age of Camelot (DAoC). Some peeps stated to make accounts, powerlevel chars, collected items and tried to sell them for real money on ebay or other auctions. During this time groups gathered who were a bit wiser then others and stated to use exploits - or at least that is what gaming-companies state now. Names like Funcom (AO), Verant (DAoC) and Blacksnow (group of players) are now well-known and it's like an ongoing soap-opera in the online-gaming-genre.

We brought you at our AO-fanpage the last statement of Funcom to this case but now new infos came up. At first the following 'spawned' in our mailbox:

False Statements in Funcom’s Press Release Regarding Dispute With BSI.

Funcom’s Press release dated March 14th, 2002, contained Statements that were inaccurate or outright false. An example of these statements would be that our lawsuit with Mythic involved our accounts being banned for exploiting. This is a clear and factual misrepresentation. All of our accounts with Mythic are in good standing and none of our accounts are banned, nor is our lawsuit in any way related to exploitation or in-game misconduct in anyway. Our dispute with Mythic is solely related to the sale of DAOC related services outside of the game.

Other statements made in Funcom’s press release are also false, and we are considering seeking legal redress for the damages caused by libelous statement(s).

Lee Caldwell

Then a visitor came up with two interesting links to unknownplayer.com. These two links try to cover the whole story and hold very interesting text-passages. Here are some examples:

[..]
But the killer are the ICQ Logs given to us by BlackSnow's Lee Caldwell...within this set of logs is some stunning information, but seemingly more harmful to BlackSnow than to FunCom. In it, not only does Lee admit that BlackSnow has hacked, macroed and duped their way to their $60,000 a month income, but he offers Adam Young $7000 to "leave us alone and protect us, and we will always tell you the exploits as they come out and that is undoubtedly a win win for funcom and us."

[..]
The rest of the ICQ log is a stunning admission of the methods of duping, trading non-drop items, macroing and token-selling. What is amazing in this case is that according to sources, Adam was told to negotiate getting the macros and exploits from BlackSnow in exchange for releasing some of the less-dangerous accounts. The problem that cropped up is that Adam slowly overstepped his bounds and began warning Lee of ways to "keep their characters under the radar," so to speak.

[..]
In exchange for their cooperation in resolving the rapid level exploit, I discussed the possibility of releasing some of their accounts. That was until the characters were looked over and some serious item duplication exploits were found. This altered the negotiations, as I could no longer return the other accounts due to the extreme nature of the exploits present. The final arrangement was that I would allow them to retrieve legit personal equipment and credits from their personal AO play characters to transfer to new characters in addition to some tokens. My rational being that two 1000 token boards on two characters was a worthwhile compromise for eliminating eight serious exploits from the game.

[..]

The two links are as follows: link1 & link2

Got it?
Some are - be it or not - expoiting and selling items for RL-money. Others are detecting it. Then there have been discussions and now it seems that some agreed to deals and others have not. Most interesting is the fact that its the same story like many years ago when hacker got hired by large companies to protect the former victim. What do we call them now? Legalized exploiter for the wellfare of us all? Heroes who fought against the establishment? Bandits who ruin the games many of you love? Whatever may be true.

We try to hang on and come up with more news when they become available to us ..

AO-Live Team 1.10 Daily update
The story of Anarchy Online is close. We have talked to the story designers to get a sneak preview of what they are planning.

The Anarchy Online storyline is about to kick in.

By the end of this month, players will be able to meet a brand new cast of characters, participate in missions closely linked with the ongoing story, uncover new content on a regular basis, partake in big events, and watch a complex and intriguing storyline begin to unroll.

But players won’t have to wait long to get their very first glimpse of what’s in store for the future. On Friday, October 5th, Funcom launches the Anarchy Online story portal, a completely new section of the AO community site.

Gaute Godager and Ragnar Tornquist have been the primary forces behind the meticulously planned storyline:

“We started working on the AO universe more than five years ago,” says Tornquist. “Then I went off to work on The Longest Journey, while Gaute continued working on Anarchy, expanding on our original ideas and developing a cast of characters and a story arc.”

It says something about the scale of Anarchy Online that Tornquist had time to complete The Longest Journey before returning to AO in 2000 to plot out, in detail, that game’s four-year story arc, as well as write a novel based on the AO universe’s back-story. And while Tornquist is now primarily working on Funcom’s new online world, Midgard, he’s still closely involved with the Anarchy Online storyline:

“It’s an amazing opportunity to tell an emergent story in a living, breathing online environment,” Tornquist says. “We’re serious about providing real context for the game-play experience, to provide players with meaning, background, and a purpose in the world, and to do all that through the story.”

To that effect, the Anarchy Online story team – consisting of Godager and Tornquist, as well as art director Didrik Tollefsen heading up a team of artists – now has a new addition in writer Aaron de Orive, previously responsible for writing the story for the cancelled Electronic Arts massively multiplayer online role-playing game Ultima Online 2.

“I’m excited by the wealth of possibilities offered by the Anarchy Online universe,” says de Orive. “The planned storyline has a rich potential for new content, events, missions, twists and turns that will get players more involved in the game, and I’m looking forward to adding my own ideas to the mix.”

But with so much on the line, and so many different expectations, will the Anarchy Online storyline deliver? And can a story – by nature a linear and inflexible beast – work in an anarchic online environment?

“Story is about context,” says Anarchy Online game director Gaute Godager. “It’s about adding structure to chaos, consequence to the inconsequential, meaning to the meaningless. The story in AO won’t be something that’s just pasted on to make it look as though it has substance: the story will link directly into new content, new game-play, and even a gradual shift in the balance of the game and the game world.”

Which begs the question: how will the story be told? When will it happen? And why has it taken so long to get started?

“The story will be told in a variety of ways, both in-game and outside of the game,” explains Tornquist. “I don’t think people have realized how integral the story will be to the game once we get started, and that’s why we’ve waited as long as we have. We wanted the technology to stabilize, we wanted to reach a critical mass of players, and we wanted the game to have the broadest release possible before commencing the story. We’re finally at that point.

“I think our players will be surprised by how we’re going to introduce and build on the story,” Tornquist continues. “New locations and zones, cities, dungeons, quests, and new characters will be added on a continuous basis, together with in-game events and a storyline that’s communicated outside the game.”

Like a TV show (which Tornquist likens this to), the AO story is told in an episodic format, starting in late October and continuing until May of next year, when the series’ first season wraps up.

“We’ll have a gradual build-up prior to the start of the season,” Tornquist promises, “and next summer’s hiatus doesn’t mean we’re closing down the game. There’ll be new things happening on a regular basis all summer, leading up to the launch of season two next fall. And of course,” he adds, “we’re going to end the season with a major bang, a real cliff-hanger.” But you’re going to have to wait until the end of May next year to see exactly what that means!

The most crucial question remains: Will all players be able to participate in and affect the storyline?

“Yes and no,” says game director Godager. “While we’ve plotted out the big story arcs for the next couple of years, we haven’t yet written the ending, and we’ve made a number of allowances for changes based on what the balance in the world will be like at any given time. Generally speaking, the in-game parts of the story – missions, dungeons, bosses, events, and planned game-play changes – will be constantly affected by player actions, while the more personal elements of the overhanging story arc – communicated through the series’ leads on both sides of the conflict – will happen independently, though that too will be coloured by what’s happening in the game world.”

“It’s all about finding the balance between good storytelling, which is about total control, and good game-play, which is about freedom,” says Tornquist. “We want both. This has always been the point of AO; to give people a real purpose to playing – it’s the main reason we wanted to make this game in the first place.”

Players will soon be able to judge for themselves whether this is the future of online gaming or not: “We’re sowing the first public seeds in a few days time,” says Tornquist, “and we’re building from there. The first episode of season one will be out by the end of the month, and before that we’re going to release the novel. We’re about to see the end result of half a decade’s planning and writing. It’s scary,” he admits, “but fun. By Christmas, I hope everyone feels the way I do – eager to see what each new episode will bring to the game and to the AO universe, in terms of story, context, and actual game-play content."

The Anarchy Online story portal launches this week. Episode one of the storyline is scheduled for release on October 31st. The first Anarchy Online novel – Prophet Without Honour – will be published on October 15th. And season one ends with a bang next May. You’ll want to follow this one from day one.
